What tools do I need for my home renovation?

Are you remodelling your home? Start the renovation process by making sure you’ve got the right set of tools. This will vary depending on the projects you’re planning to take on, but many tools are versatile enough that you’ll use them time and time again.

Here’s a list of the top 18 must-have tools for your home improvement journey and our top tip for keeping costs down along the way.

Measuring Tools

  • Tape measure: This one’s pretty self-explanatory. You’ll need a tape measure to measure dimensions and ensure everything fits correctly.
  • Level: A level, as the name suggests, is used to make sure things are level. You’ll need it to install shelves, flooring, walls, and more.
  • Square: Used to make sure corners are perfectly square, you’ll need it for wall framing, laying tiles, cutting wood, and installing cabinets, windows, doors, and more.
  • Laser level: If you’re going to be completing a hefty number of projects, you might want to invest in a laser level for maximum ease and precision.

Hand Tools

  • Hammer: Of course, a hammer is used for driving nails but it can also be used for demolishing other materials such as walls.
  • Nail gun: If you’re planning to use a lot of nails, grab a nail gun to speed up the process.
  • Screwdriver: If you’re planning to assemble furniture, hang shelves, or install doorknobs, drawer handles, or light fixtures, a screwdriver is a must.
  • Utility knife: Used for thin cutting materials with precision, opening boxes, and removing old caulking, your utility knife is bound to get its fair share of use.

Power Tools

  • Drill & impact driver: Used for drilling holes and driving screws and bolts, a good quality cordless drill and impact driver are essential for pretty much any renovation project.

You can’t go past the CAT® 2 in 1 DX12 Kit, complete with a hammer drill and impact driver for a multitude of applications. For long-lasting performance, use the CAT® GXB5 5Ah battery.

  • Reciprocating saw: The recip can cut through plenty of materials. It’s especially useful for any demolition work and removal of old materials, so that you can begin transforming your space!

The CAT® DX52 will make light work of your demo.

  • Circular saw: Circular saws are used for cutting a wide variety of materials. They’re your best bet when building decks or fences, framing walls, and cutting through sheet materials. They can also slice through concrete and metal.

We suggest the CAT® DX53, built with a magnesium alloy base for strength, and in-built hex key storage for simple blade-changing.

  • Jig saw: Jig saws are great for cutting curves and intricate shapes. For example, cutting sinkholes, trim, DIY furniture, and around obstacles in your flooring such as door frames.
  • Our recommendation is the CAT® DX51. It features a 4-Stage Pendulum mode for maximum cutting efficiency.

  • Angle grinder: An extremely versatile tool, the angle grinder can cut through a variety of materials with a variety of different blades. It’s awesome for cutting tiles and can even polish surfaces.
The CAT® DX31 makes for a comfortable experience with its slim body design and three-position handle.

  • Oscillating multi tool: The oscillating tool is perfect for cutting those hard-to-reach spots. It can also perform other functions such as sanding.
  • We recommend the CAT® DX41, complete with five blades and nine sanding sheet variations.

  • Orbital sander: For a smooth finish, grab an orbital sander. It’s often used to sand large, flat surfaces, refinish furniture, and remove paint and rust.
  • Try the CAT® DX42. It includes three sanding sheet variations and a foam pad for all your sanding, polishing, and buffing requirements.

Safety equipment

Don’t forget to stay safe during your home reno adventure. Remember to wear safety goggles, gloves, and a dust mask where appropriate.

How can I save money on tools?

The cost of all those tools can certainly start to add up. Our top tip is to buy all your power tools in a combo kit rather than individually. Not only does this approach save you money, but it also ensures that you have a cohesive set of tools that work well together.

If you’re looking to get the most bang for your buck, the CAT 10 Tool Combo is an exceptional choice. This comprehensive kit includes all the essential power tools listed above, plus two batteries, a charger, and a tool bag. That way, you’ve got everything you need to get started straight away. By buying them altogether, you’ll save over $1500, making it a smart investment for both novice and seasoned DIY enthusiasts alike.

Home renovations can seem daunting, but the result is a revitalised home and the feeling of accomplishment that you get from creating something awesome. There are many more tools that could help you through the renovation process, as it will entirely depend on the projects you plan to undertake. But these 18 tools should give you some idea of where to start. Stay safe and happy renovating!
